My mum died of Covid in January 2021, at the height of the second wave when 1,000 people were dying every day. My mum was looked after at home by wonderful carers who didn’t have adequate PPE. Like so many others, we were not with her in hospital when she died. A week after my mum’s death, the letter inviting her for her first dose of the vaccine arrived dated the day she died.
I was already angry at the way the Pandemic had been mishandled in the UK and particularly how lessons from the first wave were not learned to mitigate the effects of a second wave. So, after my mum died, I joined CBFFJ as I’m committed to working with others to achieve justice for our loved ones and ensure the lessons are learned for future pandemics.
My professional background is in the social sciences and public health. As Professor of Health Care Organisation & Management at University College London, I carry out research into the way health services are governed, managed and delivered locally, nationally and internationally. This included a national evaluation of remote home monitoring (‘virtual wards’) for COVID-19 patients.
Since 2018 I’ve also been the Non-Executive Director on the board of Whittington Health NHS Trust.
